In addition to the strength of the curriculum, a number of highlights attest to the academic quality of our program.

Combined Conferences
The Department of Emergency Medicine and the Department of Internal Medicine hold quarterly combined educational conferences. These conferences are led by PGY-3 and PGY-4 EMIM residents, who present topics pertinent to both specialties. Often, these conferences are among the most well attended of the year and generate stimulating discussion and interaction among housestaff and faculty from both departments.

Publications
By the completion of their residency, all of our EMIM residents have written at least one manuscript for submission to a peer-reviewed journal. Recent EMIM resident contributions to the literature can be found in Emergency Medicine Clinics of North America, Medical Clinics of North America, Emergency Medicine Practice, The Journal of Emergency Medicine, and Critical Decisions in Emergency Medicine.

Mentoring
EMIM residents are actively involved in teaching at the medical student level. Many participate in both the Internal and Emergency Medicine Interest Groups in the School of Medicine. EMIM residents meet with students to discuss aspects of both disciplines and provide assistance with career choices.

Committee Participation
Several of our EMIM residents are involved in local and national committees: the Resuscitation Committee of the American College of Emergency Physicians, the Resuscitation Committee of the University of Maryland Medical Center, the Performance Committee of the Baltimore VA Medical Center, and the University of Maryland Graduate Medical Education Committee.

National Presentations
As a result of faculty mentoring, several EMIM residents have been successful in their applications to give presentations at the scientific assemblies of the American College of Physicians, the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine, and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine.

Awards
EMIM residents have received a variety of both local and national awards. Each year, the Department of Emergency Medicine recognizes a senior resident for outstanding efforts in teaching. An EMIM resident has been the recipient of this award for the past 5 consecutive years. In addition to teaching, EMIM residents have received awards for clinical excellence and humanism.

Procedure Lab
In June 2005, EMIM faculty and residents developed and instituted a cadaver lab for incoming internal medicine residents. The focus of the lab is to give residents experience with procedures necessary to the practice of internal medicine. Evaluations have been outstanding since the inception of the program.
