EMPEDS Program Overview |
  |
|   |
The University of Maryland Emergency Medicine and Pediatric
combined residency was inaugurated in 1994.
The objectives of this
program are as follows:
- To train physicians for leadership roles in
community practice or academic careers in emergency medicine and pediatrics
- To
educate trainees in the evaluation and management of a broad spectrum of
illnesses in children -- from preventive medicine to emergency care to chronic
illnesses.
- To provide comprehensive training in the emergency
evaluation and treatment of patients of all ages.
Two residents are accepted
for this 5-year program each year. If taken separately, training in
the two disciplines would normally take 6 years to complete. Individuals
successfully completing this program are eligible for certification
by both the American Board of Emergency Medicine and the American Board of
Pediatrics. Currently there are only three combined emergency medicine
and pediatric residency programs in the country. Applicants to our
combined program truly have a passion for both specialties. This is easily
recognizable in our residents who bring a strong sense of balance to each
program through the blending of acute care knowledge and procedural skills
with a family centered and child friendly approach to patient care.
Training
is divided equally between the two specialties. Assignment to pediatrics
and emergency medicine in 3-to 6-month intervals gives our residents
experience with the seasonal variation of illnesses - an important aspect
of pediatric practice. The training experience encompasses all aspects of
pediatrics and emergency medicine, from the EDs, MICU, and Shock Trauma to
the NICU, PICU, and outpatient pediatric clinics. Since its inception, our
program has graduated 15 individuals board eligible in pediatrics
and emergency medicine. Approximately half of our graduates have gone into
academic positions, and the other half have gone on to community practice.
Leaders
in Education. The additional knowledge base obtained through the study of
two medical specialties allows our residents to become active educators of
junior residents and medical students both in pediatrics and in emergency
medicine. This process encourages many of our graduates to become academic
and community educators on the local, regional, and national levels.

Leadership
The program directors for the individual training programs in pediatrics
and emergency medicine, Erin Guidice, M.D. and David Jerrard, M.D.,
respectively, serve as co-directors of the combined emergency medicine
and pediatric training program. Both faculty members are certified by
their respective Boards. Bridging the two disciplines are the Associate Program
Directors Dr. Don Van Wie who completed training at the UMMS combined Emergency
Medicine and Pediatric residency in 1999 and is board certified in emergency
medicine and board eligible in pediatrics, and Dr. Rich Lichenstein who
is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine.
