Recently named "The Fittest City in America" by Men’s
Fitness magazine, Baltimore offers a wide assortment of
social and recreational options.
Residency Outings
As busy as residency can be, we make time to have fun. Feel
the wind in your hair while sailing along the Inner Harbor in our Annual
Fall Sailing Regatta. Prime your pinchers at the Crab Feast Kick-Off
at the picturesque Flanigan compound. Unwind with some friendly competition
at duckpin bowling after the in-service exam. Socialize with your
fellow residents and staff at “First Tuesdays,” aka Wing Night,
at Camden Pub. Indulge yourself at the department's elegant holiday
party at one of the best seafood restaurants in the city. Catch a
fly ball at the Orientation Baltimore Orioles game. Gear up with
5000 other runners (and our super-fit colleagues) for the scenic Cherry
Blossom 10-mile Race held in Washington, DC, in the spring. Or bring
it to one of our golf outings or poker nights. Float on an inner tube
or go white water rafting down the Shenandoah River in nearby Harpers Ferry,
West Virginia. Ladies, join other women in EM for monthly dinners
and outings to network and socialize.
Food
Several areas of town have clusters of bars and restaurants,
including breweries, an entire section of town devoted to Italian
food (Little Italy), a highly rated Afghan restaurant owned and
run by the brother of Hamid Karzai (of Afghanistan fame), and a
small Mexican restaurant famous for $1.50 National Bohemian beers
and a mandatory 10 PM Journey song nightly. Thai and Indian
restaurants are scattered throughout the city as well as, of course,
plenty of great seafood places. You can eat at a different
independently run restaurant every night for a month and never
repeat the same place and get 30 nights of great food for a good
price. If you can’t get enough of restaurant chains,
there’s a Ruby Tuesday’s, a Pizzeria Uno, and a Cheesecake
Factory downtown.
Nightife
One thing that’s great about Baltimore is its mix of bars. There
are plenty of places representing the dirty but lovable dive bar, the comfy
little Irish pub, the trendy bar (for those nights you feel like shedding the
scrubs and actually looking presentable), the $1 beer and karaoke bar, the
wine bar, the local brewery, the hard core rock band venue, and the “How
did I end up on spring break in November?” bar (see PowerPlant for a
high density of that one).
You’ve also got the dueling piano bar,
which is always a good time, especially if you and few friends share a 76-oz
mixed drink bucket (just make sure they’re good friends―it’s
hard to keep track of all those straws).
Outdoor Activities
For golfers, there are several nice courses like Rocky Point,
which puts you along the water for some of the back nine with a great view
of the Chesapeake Bay. There are several nice state parks with miles
of trails, which is always a great place to take a picnic lunch and a bathing
suit (and a dog if you have one) and spend the day outside: Catoctin
National Park for camping, Patapsco State Park for hiking and kayaking, and
Loch Raven Reservoir for canoeing and biking.
