UMEM Privacy Policy

App: UMEM
Developer: UMEM
Last updated: September 17, 2026

This Privacy Policy describes how the UMEM mobile application collects, uses, and protects information when used by University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Emergency Medicine staff and faculty. UMEM is published on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store under the developer name UMEM.

Who This App Is For

UMEM is an internal application intended solely for University of Maryland School of Medicine personnel. It requires an active institutional Microsoft/Azure AD account to sign in and is not directed at, or intended for use by, the general public or children.

Information We Collect

Account and directory information. When you sign in with your institutional account, the app accesses your employee directory record, including your name, title, work email, phone number, department, and site assignment, from University of Maryland School of Medicine's internal directory systems.

Location information. With your permission, the app accesses your device's location to verify your presence at a conference or event venue for check-in and check-out purposes. If you separately grant "Always Allow" (background) location permission, the app monitors your location only while you are checked in to a conference, solely to detect when you leave the venue and automatically check you out. Location data is not stored by the app and is not transmitted to or retained on any server.

Contacts. With your permission, the app can save a colleague's directory information to your device's address book when you choose to add a contact. The app does not read or upload your existing contacts.

Push notification data. The app registers a device push notification token so it can deliver event reminders and check-in/check-out confirmations. This token is associated with your account for delivery purposes only.

How We Use Information

Information collected through UMEM is used only to operate the app's core features: employee directory lookup, conference and event check-in/check-out, attendance tracking, and delivery of relevant notifications. We do not use your information for advertising, and we do not sell your information.

How We Share Information

We do not share your information with third parties for their own marketing or advertising purposes. Information may be disclosed to University of Maryland, Baltimore departments or systems that already maintain your employee record for the purpose of operating this app, or when required by law, subpoena, warrant, or other legal process.

Data Minimization, Retention, and Your Rights

Consistent with the University of Maryland, Baltimore IT Privacy Policy, UMEM collects only the information necessary to provide its features, and information is retained only as long as needed for that purpose or as required by applicable university policy and law.

As a University of Maryland, Baltimore employee, you may request access to personal data held about you, request correction of inaccurate information, or request deletion of information no longer needed for its original purpose, by contacting us using the information below or through applicable university HR/IT channels.

Data Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect information accessed or processed through UMEM, consistent with University of Maryland, Baltimore information security policies.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above.
