• Indian Health Services IHS serves 3.7 million beneficiaries. Annually, there is 5.4 billion dollars dedicated funding. The funding per beneficiary is $1,400 per IHS patient. This is in comparison to another federal program, the VHA, which receives $24,000 annual funding per patient • Life expectancy for Native Americans is approximately 4.5 years less than the general population of the United States. Certain diseases having a higher incidence in this patient population- I.e. alcohol related deaths and chronic liver disease is 4-6x higher compared to the general population. • Let’s strive to incorporate Ké and Hózho into patient communication and facilitate optimism in patient counseling rather than focusing on the negative consequences.
