Academic Activities and Responsibilities

I was born in the mountains of West Virginia, but grew up in Ithaca, NY. After finishing degrees in Human Development and Music at Cornell I spent a couple of years living in Brooklyn and working in Manhattan, seeking my fortune. I always loved medicine but was considering a career in music... after a couple of years I knew medicine was for me and returned to WV to attend Marshall University (WE ARE....!)

I started off medical school thinking I would be a surgeon. Through third year I discovered my passion for the undifferentiated patient, my need for hands-on medicine, and the specialty of Emergency Medicine. It offered everything I wanted in a career and in life - how many specialties can you incorporate diving, skiing, and international travel into your professional life?

During 4th year I spent a month in the ED at University of Maryland. I was blown away by the faculty, residents, and the curriculum. I went on to interview throughout the northeast, but UMEM was a perfect match. I am thrilled to be part of this program and I look forward to answering any questions you might have about UMEM or EM in general!
