I grew up in the suburbs of Washington, DC, and went to college at The George Washington University. While I was in school, I spent much of my free time around a local volunteer fire station, where I became certified in various fire fighting, rescue, and hazardous materials specialties. With my undergraduate degree in emergency medical services management, it seemed obvious that my first career would be in public safety.
After several years working full-time in the field as a fire fighter and paramedic, I found the taste of emergency medicine appealing. On my days off from the fire department, I went back to school part-time to finish some basic sciences so that I could apply to medical school. Ultimately, I ended up at the University of Virginia, in the beautiful rolling hills of Charlottesville.
Throughout medical school, I volunteered my free time with the local rescue squad, and my interest in emergency medicine endured. My decision was cemented when I spent part of my senior year in the emergency department, working alongside an outstanding group of faculty and residents. When I visited the University of Maryland, I knew it was the perfect place for me.
Baltimore is a great place to live, work, and play. Its proximity to other major cities, and with only a short drive to the beach or the mountains, allows for lots of extracurricular activities. And it seems hard to improve on the residency program: our program director is truly dedicated to the residents, the curriculum is innovative, experiences are broad and varied, and we have the best residency class in history. I absolutely couldn?t be happier with my decision to come to the University of Maryland.
