Academic Activities and Responsibilities

John Greenwood is not your average emergency physician. Born into an Irish family of nearly 100 members, he was a very curious child that grew up near the city of Philadelphia. As a youngster he was an avid soccer player, fisherman, and enjoyed reading the literary genius of Bill Watterson and Stan Lee. He also spent a lot of time with his family, which was nearly impossible to avoid since they all lived within a 10-mile radius of each other.

Upon graduating high school, John went to college at Rutgers University. There he studied economics and even predicted the crash of the stock market, and eventual US financial downturn. During his junior year however, John realized that the financial world could not satisfy his curiosities, so he decided to take on a second major in exercise physiology and apply to medical school.

John graduated Rutgers in 2004, and returned home to the city of the 2008 World Champion Philadelphia Phillies, where he enrolled at Jefferson Medical College to hone his skills. He was very fortunate to find emergency medicine early on, and immediately fell in love with the idea of being on the ?front lines? of medicine.

When applying for residency, John knew he was looking for a program that emphasized great teaching, leadership, and camaraderie amongst its students and teachers. On the interview trail, he came upon the University of Maryland and instantly knew this was the place for him. The faculty are regular, down to earth people while at the same time, monsters in the field of EM. The residents are the coolest EM residents in the world, and are always up for grabbing a beer after a long shift. He couldn?t imagine training anywhere else, and is extremely grateful to be a part of the Univ of MD.

John loves having long talks about med school, residency, and many other random things. If you have any questions at all, feel free to email him at any time.
