Information
Illness as an Adjunct to Healing: Louise B. Andrew, MD JD FACEP
Shock trauma Auditorium
Introduction: How many doctors chose medicine as a career because of their experience of illness as a child? How many because of the experience of "caretaking" an ill parent? How many of us have never been a patient, perhaps even morbidly fear becoming a patient? And how does such a mindset color our ability to be effective healers of patients? of ourselves?? of each other??? A physician, counsellor, and patient will discuss the ramifications of fearing, experiencing, and dealing with stress and illness, on a physician's career as a healer.

Purpose: After this session, you will be empowered to help yourself and inspired and equipped to support other physicians who are experiencing stress, a nearly universal phenomenon that is unusually prevalent in the medical profession today, and also to recognize and address an ESSENTIALLY iatric condition illness.
Objectives: In this presentation, an emergency physician/internist/counsellor experienced in illness will teach the lessons thereby learned. Participants will 1) learn to recognize symptoms of stress sometimes imposed by illness or disability, and compounded by the response of well colleagues, and 2) begin to learn to respond to stress and illness in ourselves or colleagues constructively.
