Educational Objectives: 1. Understand the scope and seriousness of acetaminophen poisoning and the widespread public perception that it is a safe and harmless medication. 2. Recognize the differences between acetaminophen overdose from acute single large intentional ingestion and repeated therapeutic ingestions in regard to risk factors, clinical presentation, and potential for missed diagnosis and effective treatment window with n-acetylcysteine (NAC). 3. Know the prognostic indicators that rapidly predict death from liver failure from acetaminophen toxicity and need for emergent referral to liver transplant center. 4. Know the recommendations for additional treatment measures such as activated charcoal, hemodialysis, fomepizole, and higher or extended NAC dosing.
